50 Words Project
The 50 Words Project is an online research project that aims to put together 50 words from every Indigenous language in Australia.
This project from the Research Unit for Indigenous Language is intended to be a useful resource for schools and educational organisations to learn 50 words in their local languages, and for the general public to discover the diversity of languages around Australia.
Come and see 50 Words in action on the screen on the Melbourne Connect Superfloor and hear from Associate Professor Nick Thieberger on how the project came together. You’ll have the chance to ask questions and perhaps learn a few words (or even contribute yourself!).
Australian Indigenous languages have many thousands of words but we are displaying just some on this site, with audio or video.
The 50 Words Project is led by the Research Unit for Indigenous Language at the University of Melbourne, and funded by the Duncan Leary Trust for Australian Indigenous Languages.
All words, audio, and video recordings are provided by language speakers and are included with permission.
For more information see the project website.
