Roughly one-third of the world’s food is never eaten. By reducing loss and waste, we can reduce the need for land and resources used to produce food as well as the greenhouse gases released in the process, as well as helping to close the 60 percent gap between food available today and food needed in 2050.

The Australian Food Waste Challenge, an initiative directly aligned with United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 - which aims to halve food loss and waste by 2030, resulted in a number of specific challenges set by sponsors including Secondbite, OzHarvest, Foodbank, Coles, Dairy Australia, Hort Innovation, Goodman Fielder, Harmony Agriculture & Food Co, MSC, AIP, RMCG, ADPF, the Gardiner Foundation and End Food Waste Australia.

We are calling on The University of Melbourne students to help solve some of these challenges at Melbourne Connect on 4 September.
